We have a little camp that is off grid. We haul in water and run a generator. It’s work, but I love it. Home is 27 feet long: small, comfortable camper with everything needed for a weekend. I guess that qualifies as a tiny house before they were a thing. Deer, bobcats, coyote, fox, fisher cats, beaver, ducks, heron share the land, pond and creek with us. An additional 7700 acres of state forest behind us provides privacy.
At night I light the candles and oil lamp, the glow dancing on the walls. It’s restorative stepping back from technology and modern conveniences. Everything we do is intentional and planned: how to keep food cold, ice and fuel runs, planning meals, cooking and cleanups, even using the bathroom as the tank needs to be pumped out.
We balance projects and downtime. We’ve had culverts dug out, cleared 20 years of debris and replaced, laid crushed stone, cut dead trees, started an orchard and herb garden, dug a grilling pit. Next up is to introduce native fish in the pond. Downtime includes hiking our land, visiting state parks, fishing, wineries and breweries and building relationships with new friends.
I’ll share more in future posts. Until then, explore, create, enjoy life.
